When You Have An Accident With Your Rental Car

Introduction

Many people do not know when they rent a car what their liability really is if they were to be involved in a fender bender or have a more serious accident. They do not realize that they must understand exactly how they are covered and what is covered in order to prevent a catastrophic personal loss in the event that an accident should occur.

Do You Really Need Extra Car Rental Insurance?

The first question someone should have is “do I need extra insurance”. Generally, many credit cards like American Express, Mastercard and Visa offer added insurance when you use their card to rent a vehicle but just how much coverage you have varies according to the credit card company and also whether the rental is in the United States or out of the country.

Personal automobile insurance policies also cover rental cars in many cases but not always, so it is important that you contact your insurance provider and credit card company to find out exactly how you are covered and how much is covered. This will help you to know whether you need any extra insurance.

Options Available from Car Rental Companies

Car rental companies also offer insurance options but the cost is not cheap so find out what you currently have before you opt to purchase another policy through them. Here are some insurance options they offer that you may want to consider.

What You will be Responsible for in the Event of an Accident or Wreak

If a rental car is damaged, the renter may be responsible for paying a deductible for the first few hundred dollars of damage. By purchasing a collision damage waiver or loss damage waiver, the renter is released from the responsibility of any loss or damage to the vehicle. Your personal auto insurance may already cover you for this damage to the rental car and so it may not be necessary for you to purchase the rental cars collision damage waiver. The normal rate that most rental car companies charge is around $8 to $12 per day for this coverage.

Personal accident coverage is also available through the rental car company. This provides coverage in the event of accidental death and medical coverage for the renter and any passengers. Again, you will want to check your personal car insurance policy to see if it covers car rentals because you may not need this insurance if you are currently covered.
Personal effects coverage and additional liability insurance are also available should you not have this type of coverage on your existing auto insurance.
