Car Rental Insurance: Considering the Second Driver & What About Coverage for a Spouse?

Introduction

If you are in the process of planning a trip, you likely are considering obtaining a rental car. In this regard, you may have many questions regarding car rental generally and car rental insurance specifically. This article will provide you with some helpful information about car rental insurance and coverage for a second driver or for a spouse. After your review of the informational materials contained in this article, you will be in a better position to make more intelligent decisions pertaining to car rental insurance and what type of car rental insurance coverage you really should consider.

Typical Policies of Major Car Rental Companies

Most major national car rental agencies will have additional driver fees and qualification policies. Normally any person applying to be listed as an additional driver on a qualified renter’s agreement must have a valid driver’s license, show a credit or debit card and meet the standard minimum age of 25 years old. Additionally they will need to complete an additional drivers form.

Standard Additional Driver Fees Charged by Car Rental Companies

Drivers other than the renter will be subject to a standard additional drivers fee that ranges anywhere from $9 per day up to $45 per each additional driver per rental. Some states although require no additional drivers fee such as California.

The Driver’s Spouse and Other Exemptions

Drivers that are exempt from the additional drivers fee are the renter’s spouse. In order to qualify for this exemption the renter will need to state at the time of the rental that the other driver is his or her spouse, mate, significant other or domestic life partner. No matter what category they choose, the additional driver will be treated as a spouse.

Other exemptions from the additional drivers fee are employers, employees or co-workers of renters that have corporate accounts and are conducting business activity.

Renters that are non-licensed with a disability that requires a licensed companion driver are also exempt but will need to complete an additional form.

Insurance replacement or service replacement renters can normally add their spouse or significant other, a family member that is on their insurance currently and for company vehicle replacement rentals, individuals can add another company employee or co-worker.

Age Requirements and Car Rental Insurance

Some of the major insurance companies like State Farm, American Family, Travelers, Allstate and a few others have an age requirement of at least 18 years of age to be added to the policy if the driver is a spouse or significant other, family member on their insurance policy, and company employees or co-workers with a corporate rental.
